Firstly, what is Windows? All versions of Windows (e.g. Windows 2000, XP and Vista, etc.) are operating systems. There are alternatives: there are many different flavours of Linux (or more properly GNU/Linux) and OS/X (which usually runs on Apple computers but can now be installed on generic PCs).</p>
